Sometimes open
The Sometime Gallery opened sometime in 2007 when I took a lofty space up three flights of stairs in the old lead paint factory for the Pacific Fleet. East Oakland’s Dutchboy Complex had long hosted proper artists’ studios, but a development company finally decided they’d install toilets and basic kitchens and try renting out as livable spaces.
It was only my third year in Oakland, California. I moved in and set forth to host a number of art experiences and events in my home where I made friends but hardly influenced people. I had a narrow space on the third floor long enough for an archery range. I had a nearly 365 degree view of sky, trains, and transit. I could tell what time it was by the screech of BART. The all-window space got too much sun year round and zero heat in the colder months and I loved it.
The first event was a private party with dinner and a band on September 20, 2007. I have continued with installations and happenings ever since. Am I having one now? You never know.
